Pet Nonprofits To Help In After Hurricane Fiona and Hurricane Ian
By: Ana Sofía Raffucci
A few weeks ago, Puerto Rico was hit by a Category 1 hurricane named Fiona. Hurricane Fiona made landfall and dropped up to 30 inches of rain in some areas of Puerto Rico. This caused rivers to overflow, rock and mudslides to occur, and left the Island without electricity and water.
The southern part of the island was the most affected by floods that destroyed houses and access roads. Three weeks later, Puerto Rico still has areas and communities without access to basic necessities like electricity and water. Shelters and animal sanctuaries were flooded and damaged, and over one hundred pets were relocated with their families to shelters because they had lost everything. To put into perspective, statistics indicate that 2 out of 3 Puerto Rican households have one or more pets.
Not long after, Hurricane Ian made landfall in Fort Myers, Florida before making its final landfall near Georgetown, South Carolina. The Category 4 hurricane brought a storm surge, rainfall, and flooding to the gulf coast of Florida.
As of October 6th, 2022, nearly 200,000 homes are still without electricity. Due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Ian, many pets are in need of care or being surrendered by families who are on longer equipped to care for them.
Nonprofits around Puerto Rico and the States are joining forces to help as much as they can. In Puerto Rico, Pet Friendly PR joined forces with Gustazos Puerto Rico by doing local food drives for both humans and animals and transporting everything to communities and areas that were most affected.
The Sato Project is also doing a Sato Drive to collect food, leashes, towels, beds and toys in various locations to help with the efforts. Stateside in Florida, the ASPCA is on the ground in Florida aiding with search-and-rescue, sheltering, and distributing pet food to pet owners who have been affected by Hurricane Ian.
If you would love to help with disaster relief for our furry friends, we encourage you to follow and donate to any of these wonderful pet related non-profits who are doing everything in their power to help our animals across the Island and in the States.
